Things to do in Ingapirca, Ecuador: a guide for adventure travelers

Most travelers who visit the Ingapirca archaeological complex arrive, do the tour in an hour from Cuenca, and head back. They miss the best part: trails that follow the Inca Trail in Ecuador, the Inca Face, horseback rides at sunset, and the silence of the páramo. This guide is for those who want to stay.

Hiking in Ingapirca and the Inca Face

The surrounding trails cross the Ecuadorian páramo: frailejones, lagoons, and a color palette that shifts with the light. Ten minutes from the complex, the Inca Face —a natural rock formation with the profile of an Inca face— is the find that backpackers discover and day-trippers never see. For the more adventurous, Ingapirca is the endpoint of the Inca Trail trek: three days from Achupallas through alpine lagoons and tambo ruins.

Horseback riding in the Andes and experiential tourism

Riding horseback along the same paths of the Tahuantinsuyo, with the sun setting over the páramo, is one of those experiences you don’t forget. In the Ingapirca area, Cañar, the routes combine landscape, Cañari communities, and local animals —llamas included.

“The colors at sunset are truly beautiful. Feeding the llamas, the horseback ride… it’s those simple moments that make the trip unforgettable.” — @diegospaciuk & @_soytiara
