Lodging near Ingapirca: a historic hacienda in the heart of the Andes

300 meters from the Ingapirca Archaeological Complex —Ecuador’s most important archaeological site, where the Cañari and Inca legacies converge— stands an old hacienda house that doesn’t just offer lodging: it holds something more.

Posada Ingapirca is the closest accommodation to the ruins, located in the province of Cañar, 1.5 hours from Cuenca. Its walls hold decades of history, and its windows frame landscapes that time seems to have chosen to preserve intact.

Here, the experience is total. The restaurant prepares traditional highland cuisine with local ingredients. The rooms —from fireplace suites to double rooms with views of the archaeological complex— offer hot water, heating, and private bathrooms. When night falls, the entertainment room beckons: a lit fireplace, billiards, foosball. And if the sky is clear, there’s a bonfire, marshmallows, and stars.

What to do near the hacienda

From the Posada, the Andes open up in every direction. The Ingapirca tour from Cuenca has its natural stop here: the archaeological complex is steps away, with entrance from $2 per adult including a guide. Ten minutes away, the Inca Baths in El Tambo hold another chapter of living history. For the more adventurous, Culebrillas Lagoon in Sangay National Park rewards with breathtaking páramo landscapes.

Horseback rides through the Ecuadorian Andes are available on request: 3 hours, $30 per horse. There are also private trails, alpacas, and guided tours to the Inca Face and the Inca Trail.

Events and special seasons

The calendar also plays its part. In February and March, the Taita Carnaval Cañari transforms the area into an ancestral celebration of color and indigenous cosmovision. In June, Inti Raymi (June 20–23) marks the Andean solstice with an energy you feel before you understand.

The Posada is not a stopover hotel. It’s the place from which Ingapirca —and everything that surrounds it— is truly experienced.
